About the Area

Carretera Austral Full

The Southern highway has become one of Chile’s most attractive location for tourism. It has opened up a vast territory where a lot is left to discover: Northern Patagonia.
A region of national parks, glaciers, ice caps, fjords, rivers and lakes where wilderness prevails.
It is an ideal area for adventure tourism, trekking, fishing, extreme sports, kayaking and rafting without mentioning the observation of varied native flora and fauna.

The Southern highway, built between 1976 and 1987, covers 1240 km, from just below Puerto Montt in the North, to Villa O’Higgins in the South at the foot of the Southern Ice cap.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival at Balmaceda airport, meet with a member of Condor explorer and transfer to the hotel El Reloj in Coyhaique.

Day 2
Drive down to Cerro Castillo village where horses will be awaiting us for an approximate 6 hours ride on the Cerro Castillo Mountain combined with a 45 min hike to the Laguna Cerro Castillo viewpoint.
Late afternoon arrival at the lakeshore village of Puerto Tranquilo. Dine and lodge at the hostel El Puesto.

Day 3
Visit to the Marble Caves, a mushroom shaped island riddled with tunnels and caves. The island lays a short boat ride away in the General Carrera lake, South America’s second biggest lake.
Return drive to Coyhaique after lunch, enjoying the ever-changing sceneries and the snow capped mountain to arrive in Coyhaique for super and lodge at the hotel El Reloj.

Day 4
Early morning departure to Chacabuco to board the ferry Catamaranes del Sur for a day trip to the Laguna San Rafael and its impressive glacier, one of the rare glaciers breaking into a lagoon surrounded by rain forest.
The excursion includes a zodiac ride through ice bergs, all meals, open bar with whiskey on millennium ice. Lodging in Chacabuco

Day 5
We’ll discover the Northern part of the Southern highway, driving to the Thermal waters of Puyuhuapi, where a small ferry will take us to the remote bay of Bahia Dorita .

Day 6
A day of leisure and indulgence at the Puyuhuapi Spa. A good opportunity to rest and relax, with the options to do a small trek around the dense forest surrounding the hotel or a short kayak adventure.

Day 7
Early return drive to Coyhaique, not without stopping at the Quelat national park, famous for his hanging glacier. A couple of hours hike will make us discover the unique fauna and flora that Patagonia holds due to its numerous microclimates and the abundant water.

Day 8
The morning is available for a walk around town or for some last minute shopping. Afternoon transfer to the airport and onto connecting flights.
